  • Bayfield sits on the edge of Chequamegon Bay in Lake Superior and began as a Native American settlement inhabited by several different tribes prior to being discovered by European settlers. The bay region really began to boom in the 1850s as the first big ships were allowed to enter into Lake Superior. Bayfield, during this time, was completely reliant on lake transportation to provide goods and services. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that Bayfield’s population reached 500, around this time schools, churches, lodges, hotels, and other establishments began popping up.
