The house that is now home to Sidwell Friends Bed and Breakfast was built in the 1920s for Dr. M.M. Lumbattis, a prominent Mount Vernon dentist. The classic colonial style, the craftsmanship, and the size and location of the house all give evidence to the success Dr. Lumbattis had achieved. Sidwell Friends is an intimate (three room), Five Star Bed and Breakfast located in the heart of Southern Illinois at the Crossroads of I-64 and I-57. Guests are encouraged to enjoy the formal living room, sunroom/library, deck, and garden patio for reading lounging or conversation. And each morning you'll be greeted with a full, deliciously cooked breakfast! For more information or to book a stay, contact us today. Note: A mature English Bulldog is in the house. She does not have access to the second floor where the guest rooms are located, nor does she have the "run of the house". Sidwell Friends Guest House is an extended stay five room cottage that has been completely redecorated. It has one bedroom with a queen size bed. There is one full bath with a tub shower combination. It has a fully equipped ---dishes, glassware, silverware, cookware, cooking utensils--- eat-in kitchen that has been remodeled. The remodel includes new Samsung Black Stainless Appliances, "Black pearl" granite countertops. In addition to a formal dining room and living room, there is a den/office.
Mr. Sidwell purchased the house in 2003 with the intention of opening Mount Vernon's first B&B. Following his retirement from a career of college teaching in May of 2007, he began in earnest what came to be a year of serious remodeling and redecorating. The end product provides an elegant showcase for his collection of fine furniture, artwork, books, and accessories. And, he's excited that others are now able to enjoy the house, its furnishings, and the grounds.
