The area now known as the Hamptons was inhabited by indidgenous people for thousands of years before Europeans came. The Algonquian-speaking Pequot people lived in East Hampton and controlled most of eastern Long Island. Native Chief Wyandanch negotiated to sale the land in East Hampton to English colonists in the late 17th century. Many of the indigenous people died from a series of smallpox epidemics in the 17th and 18th centuries and their numbers dwindled as more Europeans came to the area. East Hampton was New York’s first English settlement. The town was originally named Maidstone after a town in England but was later renamed Easthampton to go along with the geographic town names of Westhampton and Easthampton. Since that time, the town name was eventually divided into two words.

The weather in East Hampton varies seasonally and has led to the resort town seeing a huge surge of visitors in the summertime and very quiet winters.
